Training Description:

The Institute for Play Therapy in partnership with the International Puppet Therapy Training and Kinesthesis Centre for Assessment & Support of Children, Adolescents & Families is proud to present this international seminar series on Puppet Play Therapy with Children, Teens, and Families. Participants can earn 24 play therapy CEs through this interactive online seminar series. Puppet play therapy is the use of puppets in the context of play therapy with children, teens, and families. Puppets serve as a safe medium for children to explore problems and tell their story. This four-week online play therapy training series will take participants on a journey of puppet play therapy skills and interventions with young children, older children, teens, and families. Participants will learn what types of puppets are a good fit for play therapy. In this interactive training, participants will have the opportunity to create a puppet theater and different types of puppets each week of the training. Participants will also learn and practice facilitative and directive therapeutic responses that can be used in puppet play, with an emphasis on how to respond in the puppet metaphor. The training will culminate with a focus on family puppet play therapy.

Please note: Priority registration is being offered to International Puppet Therapy Training (IPT-S) participants through 4/7/21. If you are an IPT-S participant, please reach out to Åsa Viklund for the authorization code. 


Learning Objectives & Schedule

Week 1 – Introduction to Puppet Play Therapy

  1. Describe puppet play therapy
  2. Review fundamental puppet play therapy concepts and puppet assessment techniques
  3. Identify benefits of using puppets with children
  4. Define 4 considerations in curating puppets for play therapy
  5. Participate in the “Choose a Puppet” intervention
  6. Create a puppet theater

  • 9-10a – Intro to puppet play therapy
  • 10-10:30a – Benefits of puppet play therapy with children and families
  • 10:30-11a – Curating puppets for play therapy
  • 11-11:30a – Choose a puppet intervention
  • 11:30a-12p – Review Puppet Play Therapy seminar schedule

Week 2 - Basic Play Therapy Skills with Puppets

Learning Objectives:

  1. Evaluate the application of puppet play therapy to 4 theoretical approaches
  2. Identify basic play therapy skills that can be used with puppets
  3. Demonstrate nondirective puppet play therapy skills
  4. Explore goal setting in puppet play therapy
  5. Demonstrate 4 steps for progress assessment with puppets
  6. Create a monster sock puppet for the playroom

Schedule:

  • 9-10a – Applying puppet play therapy to theories; Discuss nondirective and directive puppet play therapy
  • 10-11a – Basic play therapy skills & practice with puppets
  • 11-11:30a – Goal setting and progress assessment with puppets
  • 11:30a-12p – Miracle question and scaling practice

Week 3 - Storytelling with Puppets

  1. Assess 6 puppet play therapy techniques
  2. Explore benefits of using puppets in bibliotherapy
  3. Apply treatment goals to bibliotherapy topics with puppets
  4. Create puppet stories based on presenting issues in play therapy
  5. Demonstrate puppet show based on presenting issues
  6. Create felt puppets as a puppet play therapy intervention

Schedule:

  • 9-10a – Directive puppet play therapy techniques
  • 10-10:30a – Benefits of using puppets in bibliotherapy
  • 10:30-11a – Apply treatment goals to bibliotherapy topics
  • 11-11:30a – Create puppet stories based on presenting issues
  • 11:30a-12p – Puppet shows based on presenting issues

Week 4 - Family Puppet Play Therapy

  1. Discover the use of puppet play therapy with special populations
  2. Examine steps of the family puppet interview
  3. Practice family puppet interview skills with peers
  4. Explore family sculpting with puppets as a family play therapy intervention
  5. Identify specific puppet play therapy takeaways
  6. Create family spoon puppets

Schedule:

  • 9-10a – Puppet play therapy with special populations and families
  • 10-11a – Family puppet interview learning and practice
  • 11-11:30a – Family sculpting
  • 11:30a-12p – Takeaways from training

Cancellation Policy

Nonrefundable fees: There is a $35 nonrefundable fee for administrative costs associated with processing each payment. 

Cancellations: Written cancellations received two weeks prior to the start of the training will receive a refund minus the nonrefundable fee. Cancellations within two weeks of the training, after the training, or no shows will not receive a refund.

The Institute for Play Therapy reserves the right to cancel a seminar if there are fewer than 8 participants registered as of 14 days before the start of the seminar. In the case of cancellation, we will refund registration fees in full or the participant can choose to apply funds towards an alternate seminar.
